  • LEGIONELLA AND HEATING SYSTEMS - ARE YOU AT RISK

Legionella in the wrong type of heating system can kill you and with some 350 cases of the disease in England and Wales every year more must be done to avoid this potentially fatal disease, according to Denis Kerr, UK Managing Director for REM - one of Europe’s most successful suppliers and installers of environmental heating systems.

  • Wood Burners - A real alternative to conventional boilers

With rising fuel prices, woodburners have become a viable alternative for homeowners looking for a cheaper way of heating their home. But until recently, connecting them to an existing sealed heating system has proved problematic. Renewable energy specialists REM, in partnership with Broseley Fires, have developed the solution – Broseley’s Safety Cold Water System enables wood burning stoves to be integrated directly to sealed heating systems, solar panels and other renewable technologies.

  • Heating system neglect are you making a killing?

In 2002, Britain’s worst outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease killed seven people in Barrow, Cumbria. Along with the seven deaths, 180 others were affected after a catalogue of errors led to the release of the deadly bacteria. Sadly, the tragedies that followed could easily have been avoided.

In their normal environment, Legionella bacteria are mostly harmless, but manmade water systems can provide favourable conditions that allow the bacteria to multiply to large numbers, causing dangerous outbreaks.

  • Drain Back Solar Explained

    Overview and introduction

Solar Thermal is probably the easiest most cost effective renewable technology to integrate into either the retrofit market or the new build market. Although the emphasis in the UK has in recent years been of solar PV the cost of installation are often high with large areas of roof cover often being necessary to provide viable amounts of energy, Solar thermal however requires much smaller roof areas generally with between 3m² and 6m² being often enough to make a significant reduction in energy. With existing dwellings being of poorer construction the energy consumption of the house has historically been in excess of 100w/m² however with improved construction the heat demand on the structure has now dropped to more like 30-50 w/m². What has not significantly changed is the hot water demand in fact with the fashion for power showers and high volume hot water deliverance if anything the hot water demand has risen.

  • Understanding Solar Thermal Systems

Look before you leap, The Drain Back Design Fit for the UK or anywhere else.

There are many types of solar thermal systems now in the marketplace and it can be a confusing time for the end user or specifier. What has been seen in the UK over recent months is the rush to get into the lucrative solar PV market especially as the FIT subsidy is set to be reduced in the coming months and years. This has lead to a gold rush mentality with frankly some questionable sales companies taking advantage of in particular the consumer in selecting, selling and installing inadequate and poor standard Solar PV installations.

  • You will save more!

Investing in solar heating is better than investing on photovoltaic's says REM. Most householders spend more on gas and oil to heat their homes and provide hot water than they do on electricity so why spend a fortune installing photovoltaic panels that will take more than 12 to 15 years to pay for themselves.
